Something for the Weekend: Inspiration & Fun Links!

This past week has been rough. I was sick the week before with what I thought was something viral, but come Sunday I realized it was something more and thought I might have had an appendicitis. I ended up in the ER where it turns out my appendix was fine but I had a large ruptured ovarian cyst that had leaked blood and fluid into my abdomen, which explains the extreme pain I had been in. They gave me IV fluids and pain meds and sent me home with nausea medication, anti-inflammatory medication and pain medication. I followed up with my OB/GYN the following day and he said that I could expect to feel pretty rough for the next two weeks while my body absorbs all the blood and fluid.

He was right. I’ve been miserable. I’ve never had such bad abdominal pain in my life. I haven’t been able to work and I’ve spent most of the week taking pain meds and lying in bed. My doctor said it may take two weeks to feel “normal” again. I’ve missed almost two weeks of work now and had to apply for FMLA. I’m really hoping feel better and go back next week.

In the mean time, since lying around has been all I’ve been able to do, I designed and built my photography business website, Jen Theodore Photography. It’s a work in progress and I’m updating it daily. I haven’t promoted it at all because I’m not at the point where I’m ready to do studio sessions – we have some work to do to make the studio ready and I have a bunch of props I want to buy for newborn shoots. I’d love your feedback if you wanted to check it out! Once I’m ready, I’ll be running a few specials with deep discounts to get new clients and build my portfolio. I’m really excited to start shooting professionally again!

What’s been inspiring me this week? Here’s what I’ve been enjoying:

  • Reading this post on how to write an engaging Instagram caption by The Shop Files. I’m working on my Instagram game after neglecting it for quite some time and she had some really great suggestions!
  • Soaking in all the tips and tricks offered by Caroline Vencil of Surefire Ways to Promote Your Blog and Grow Your Audience. She talks a lot about ramping up your Pinterest game and since that’s where the majority of my traffic comes from, I know it’s worth investing my time in.
  • Purchased this blanket fade brush for Photoshop and it’s wonderful and only $8! I was editing some newborn pictures I’d taken years ago and trying to figure out how to get the perfect fade – this is it.
  • Pinning tons of inspiration for birth photography and Fresh 48 sessions on my Pinterest board Birth Photography and Fresh 48s. Moms-to-be, wouldn’t you love to have your birth and baby captured this way? I wish I had done this with my children when I had them!
  • Shopping for newborn props and accessories for newborn photography on eBay. There’s a lot of really great stuff out there I’d love to add to my studio.
  • Loved this post by Lorrin Sell on How to Document the Teen Years. Having a 13-year-old now, nearly 14-year-old, he doesn’t always want to pose for pictures and more often than not when asked, will make crazy faces at me … hopefully some of her tips help!

Well, this weekend I’m going to be taking it easy and resting up, maybe even reading a little bit of David Busch’s Canon EOS 80D book so I can figure out how my new camera works! My son is being confirmed on Sunday so there will be plenty of picture-taking opportunities there and I want to be ready!

Leave me a comment and let me know what’s inspired you this week? What are you up to this weekend?

Oh goodness, I hope you feel better soon!! That sounds miserable. My best friend had that a few times, most notably in HS when she collapsed after we ran the mile. She said it’s excruciating!

Glad you are on the mend – hard to say what has inspired me this week but I have completed some work projects that were just dragging on for what felt like forever but now those are knocked off of my list so my work load is feeling more manageable!
