Something for the Weekend: Inspiration & Fun Links

This week was a little bit of a rough one for me. I’m having a hard time dealing with all I’m missing out on with my children because of this illness. I didn’t feel well enough to go to the Fourth of July parade or fireworks … I missed seeing my baby girl’s expression at both of those events for the first time. There’s a certain sadness that goes along with that. My husband wanted to get up north to our cabin this week, but I didn’t feel well enough to drive down to my parents a couple hours away and he didn’t feel like he could safely leave me here alone so he didn’t go. And there’s a certain amount of guilt that goes along with that.

I also made the decision to wean off the strong narcotics I’ve been taking for my abdominal pain as they haven’t helped all that much anyway. So, I’m off them and hurting pretty badly. I am in the process of getting set up with our local pain management clinic for other non-narcotic options, but for now, I’m just having to deal.

I did (literally) save up all my energy last Sunday and spent an hour shooting my friend Nicole’s lovely family at a cool industrial location about 20 minutes from here. It was a blast and we got so many great images. It wiped me out for two days afterward, but I eventually found time to edit 120 images and got them to her this week … and she loved them! You can see some of the best here.

I’m hoping for a better weekend these next couple of days!

This week, I’ve been:

  • Reading this great post on blog post length: How Many Words Should a Blog Post Have? There’s a ton of really great research here about what the experts say regarding post length and shares on social media.
  • Enjoyed this post by Twin Pickle about The Need for Minimalism: Confessions of a Hoarding Mom. I’ve spent the last four weeks slowly cleaning out one of our storage lockers … making a dent a little at a time and I’m getting there … it looks so much better already! And it feels SO good to let all that stuff go (and make a few bucks off it too!).
  • Finally pulled the trigger and invested in a great zoom lens for my Canon, the 17-55mm f/2.8. Got it for a great deal from a fellow photog on Facebook who was looking to unload some of her gear for way less than what it retails for, so I’m thrilled. I sold my beloved road bike since I can’t ride anymore, so I wanted to spend the money on something fun just for myself. It comes in the mail today … and you know I’ll be playing with it this weekend!
  • Enjoyed this post about 9 Ways to Feel Happier by Neely of It Starts with Coffee. Some good reminders for us all in there!
  • I finally put together an “everything” basket for the trunk of my car this week, full of everything me or the kiddos could need while running errands or driving to the grandparents! Here’s an article about 10 Tips for Traveling with your Kids in the car for all of you who may have vacation plans that involve driving!
  • I’ve been cleaning up our studio space in the basement as much as I can with my weight restriction … (Next involves getting the drill out and making some holes … shh… don’t tell the hubby!). Think I’m going to order this roll of Savage Seamless Background Paper in Fashion Grey. It’s only $35 and is 54-inches by 12 yards … so plenty of it to pose the kids on if they cooperate!
  • I stopped at Goodwill and actually found some cute outfits for me. It’s hard to justify spending money on new clothes when I’m losing weight and know they likely won’t fit me for long … so Goodwill is the perfect spot to pick up some new items. I sold a bunch of clothes (like bags full!) on Facebook, so I had a few pennies to spend to make up for what I got rid of.
  • Backing up all of my photos to my external drives, something I haven’t done in a few months. Read my article here about my process and what works for me (and might for you too … it’s not hard, I promise!).
  • Bought an extra insurance rider for my camera equipment and my husband’s as well. For just over $120/year, we can insure $5,000 of equipment against loss, damage or theft. There’s some relief in having that when you have as much money invested in camera and studio gear as we do. We just added it to our renter’s insurance. Check with your insurance agent and make sure your electronic valuables are covered!
  • Listed a lot of my dress clothes from back in the day when I wore them on eBay … if you’re a 4/6 size or wear a size 8 shoe, check them out here – they’re pretty timeless!

So, what’s inspired you this week? What’s your plans for the weekend? Leave me a comment and let me know or share with me some internet goodies you’ve discovered!

Well, this WAS inspiring! What a productive week! This has actually inspired me to go and take several bags of clothes I have to donate in and actually do it. They’ve been sitting in the garage for weeks. I’m also looking forward to checking out some of those articles you mentioned…sounds like good stuff. Hope you’re feeling better this coming week.

Wow, you got a lot accomplished! Nice work! I’m currently in the process of downsizing and having a thrift sale or donating things. It feels so good to minimalism a little!

aww. Hope for a speedy recovery and it’s so brave that you are trying to cope without high dose strong narcotics, takes a lot of strength to do that but I’m sure in the long run it is better for you.
