Something for the Weekend: Inspiration & Fun Links!

This week was another rough one. Fortunately, I’m thinking this coming week will be better – I’m optimistic! I spent most of this week in bed getting IV fluids and just too exhausted to even think of doing anything. Wednesday I met with pain management to come up with a treatment plan for my gastroparesis pain. I kinda stumped them as they’ve never dealt with anyone with my condition as it’s pretty rare. We did come up with a plan that I’m optimistic will help in the long run, but I’ve got to titrate on to one of the meds over the next three weeks to see if it will really help.

Thursday was a much better day, I actually got dressed and ran errands. It felt good. I found this awesome vintage 1950s cosmetic mirrored train case by Samsonite at the thrift store for $1.99. I can’t wait to use it as a photo prop in some photos with Ella! Doesn’t it look cool? They’re selling for upwards of $100 on Etsy, so it was a great score! I also found some other newborn photography props like a large basket and a beautiful throw … I’m feeling good about my newborn prop collection! Now I just have to clean out the studio and get it all organized…

So, what’s be inspiring me this week? What have I been up to?

  • Creative Market has a very nice freebie Social Media Lifestyle pack. Check out their weekly free downloads here.
  • This post is a nice gentle reminder to give yourself a little more grace when it comes to motherhood, by Ellen of Young Love Mommy.
  • I sold my first full gallery of photography images of the family I shot a couple weekends ago. I use Pixieset on Jen Theodore Photography to showcase and deliver my work and I have to say I’m very impressed with how smoothly everything worked. There were a few little hiccups, but my client and I worked them out easily. I’m definitely going to be staying with Pixieset for my photo fulfillment! Sign up here to get additional free storage space for your photos thru my promotional link if you’re interested! They have free plans to get you started, no financial commitment!
  • I’m having major drool issues over the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II lens. I’m waiting to hear from the mechanic next week what my Lexus repairs are going to cost … they told me either something like $300 … or more like $2,100.  Obviously I’m hoping for the lower end! This lens is more expensive than my camera body … but I’m still lusting after it. I’m shooting a wedding next spring and it would be perfect for it (see the justification there?). 🙂
  • Last weekend, Mike and I picked up the perfect starter DSLR camera for Hannah, our 8-year-old daughter. She had gotten a point-and-shoot for Christmas that broke right away. We talked about it and decided she’s old enough she can start learning the trade. So, we found her a used Canon EOS Rebel T3 on Craigslist for a ridiculously good price. She’s in heaven with her new camera. I ordered her a camera strap cover from this great Etsy shop and it should come early this week. (That way she can be just like mom, as I have one on my camera too!).
  • I went thru our storage unit and found what little 3T/4T clothes we have from Hannah. It seems I was pretty sure we were done having babies and got rid of most of those sizes of clothes. So, I’ve been shopping around to start building her 3T wardrobe. I got some great deals on The Children’s Place ruffle hem jeans on eBay and have about 8 pairs that came this week! And The Children’s Place had some good sales this week too! I just always find better prices on gently used toddler denim on eBay, so I go there first!
  • The Luxe Lens is offering an additional 10% off it’s already great sale on presets and actions for Lightroom and Photoshop, check it out here. I have a number of their Lightroom presets and they’re great!
  • Took the girls to JoAnn’s and spent some time picking out silk flowers and greenery in order to make our own head wreaths for photos, via this pin on Pinterest. I want to get some beach shots of them with the crowns playing in the waves!
  • This is a great article about letting go of expectations when it comes to photography and how it changed how one photographer shoots completely. I learned a lot reading it … lots of good pointers!
  • Working on a couple of posts for next week (yes, next week there will be more than just my Something for the Weekend!) – I have a tutorial on floral crowns and a couple of lens reviews in the works!

Well, I’m actually not sure what our plans are for the weekend … just we’ll just take it as it comes. I have my son so I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with him over the next few days… as much as a 14-year-old boy can stand anyway.

So, drop me a comment and let me know what’s inspired you this week or what your plans are for this weekend! I love connecting with all of you!

You are busy! I love learning about all you are doing with photography. Lots of helpful links.

    • Jen

  • Sane Mama

So sorry to hear about your Gastroparesis… I totally get it because my sister has it. She just spent 10 days in the hospital and was on a PICC line for 6 weeks. I wish there were better treatments for this disease…

    • Jen

Thank you. It’s hard being diagnosed with something that has no cure. I wish you sister the best of luck. I belong to a wonderful support group on Facebook “Gastroparesis Support Group” and they’ve been so wonderful, welcoming and encouraging. Pass it on to your sister if she’s in need of some support or just want to connect to others going thru the same thing.

  • Le

Fingers crossed that you start feeling better soon. That’s so hard.

    • Jen

Thank you … I hope so too. Yesterday was rough, today is a little better! 🙂 I’ll take what I can get!

  • Jessica Peresta

I love all of your advice about what to do and not do about photography. My husband is really into photography and I keep trying to encourage him to do more with his passion. Maybe one day…

    • Jen

Thank you, I’m glad you find it helpful and I hope it helps him! Encourage him to explore his passion! Thanks for stopping by!

  • rachel

HOW do you find things like that at thrift shops?! I NEVER get that lucky! Also, just pinned the flower crown AND signed up for creative market 😉 You are a GEM, Jenna! <3 xo

    • Jen

Thank you – glad you found some helpful links! I LOVE haunting the thrift shops and have found amazing scores over the years (one that stands out was a whiteglass Strawberry Shortcake mug I bought for 25 cents and sold on eBay for $125!). I have gotten probably half of my props at thrift stores for photography – everything from baskets for infants and blankets for backdrops for infants to vintage marketing wooden crates for kids to sit on and a wonderful blue upholstered vintage chair! And yes, you can’t go wrong with Creative Market – I’ve gotten so much great stuff from them over the years!

  • Corey | The Nostalgia Diaries

Congrats on the full gallery! And oh my goodness, that train case is amazing — I can’t believe you got that for less than $2!

    • Jen

Thank you – it felt really good that they liked the photos that much! I can’t wait to take some pics with my 2 year old in this ivory lace dress with that train case if I can just get her to cooperate!

  • Justine @ Little Dove

That train case is so cute! And congrats on selling your first images!

    • Jen

Thank you, on both! I can’t wait to get my two year old to take some pics with the train case! Hope you’re having a good week so far!
