Something for the weekend

Something for the weekend - what's been inspiring me this week

Hope this last week has treated you nicely! I was asked to submit a write-up and photographs for Amazing Moms: Parents of the 21st Century, a coffee table book by United We Parent and I finally got everything together and submitted this week. It was something of a struggle to get what they considered a decent self-portrait. I just hate being in front of the …

Book Review: Star, Branch, Spiral, Fan by Yellena James

Star, Branch, Spiral, Fan: Learn to Draw from Nature's Perfect Design Structures (Amazon, $15.17) did not disappoint - it's gorgeous inside and out and the content is amazing! The book is designed to teach a beginner how to draw, using nature's shapes to form beautiful designs.

I’ve been a huge fan of artist Yellena James for years. In 2009 I purchased one of her beautiful prints, framed it and hung it above my daughter’s changing table. That print now hangs over the crib of my youngest daughter. When I’d received my print in the mail from Yellena, she included a limited edition lino print in aqua which I have framed above …

Balancing motherhood, work and blogging

o, how do I balance it all – being a mother to three children ages 13, 7 and 1, a wife, and a labor and delivery nurse? Some weeks are better than others, I’m not going to lie. But I’ve found the key is prioritizing and planning. I’m going to share my tips with you here. Maybe there’s something you can take away from them to better balance the priorities in your life.

I’ve been blogging at Jennadesigns for nine years now! What started as an outlet for my creative projects has turned into something of a community and I’m loving it. Depending on what was going on in my life at the time – school, new baby, new relationship, new job – I’ve blogged less often than I would have liked in the past. But it seems …

DIY: Photo backdrop stand, $10 and 10 minutes

I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to DIY your own backdrop stand out of PVC pipe, so I grabbed my trusty notebook and drew up a quick sketch of what I'd need. Because my space in the basement is limited, I decided to go with a stand that was 54-inches wide and just over 60-inches tall. This is the perfect height for (smaller) kids like I have.

I take a ton of pictures, not just of my children, but also for the blog. I’ve been in the process of setting up a home photography studio in the basement for the past few months. (My post here about how to set up a home studio on a budget has been hugely popular!). I had ordered a number of vinyl photography backdrops from China …

Something for the weekend

Hello friends! Hope this week has treated you well ... it's been a busy one for us: Valentine's Day, speech therapy for Ella, parent teacher conferences and I'm gearing up for my weekend of work. I had some time to play in the studio Wednesday night and took this gorgeous shot of some Gerbera daisies I picked up at the store the other day. I followed this tutorial and made a PVC backdrop stand which works great for hanging my vinyl backdrops with a few clamps! Bonus - it only cost $10 in materials and took all of five minutes to put together!

Check out my post here for my method of organizing and backing up digital images. My main computer is my MacBook Pro and I use OS …

How to organize your digital photos: A system that works!

Follow my simple step-by-step process to getting all your photos organized digitally! - Jennadesigns

I don’t know about you, but until I organized my photos a couple months ago, I had images everywhere – my computer, my phone, my spouse’s phone, in text messages and emails, not to mention on sites like Facebook and Instagram! I also had many years worth of digital images on CDs and DVDs in the closet. To say I had been paralyzed with indecision …

Conscious Ink – a fun little treat

I was playing around on Instagram the other week when I cam across an ad for Conscious Ink, a company that creates inspirational temporary tattoos. I thought it would be fun for Hannah and I to get a couple, so I ordered four – two for her and two for me. I got “compassion” and “she believes she could, so she did” and Hannah got …
