30-day Mental Cleanse Challenge

Last month, two bloggers I follow – Kiara at Blissfully Brunette and Erin from A Welder’s Wife – undertook the 30-day Mental Cleanse Challenge. I enjoyed following their progress weekly and have been motivated to give it a shot the month of March. It just sounds like a nice way to ease into spring and something my mind and body is telling me it needs! …

35 tips for frugal living with children – How we get by on less

Where do I find ways to save money? Here my top 35 tips on getting by on less:

In 2009 I wrote a popular blog post about how I made things work financially while being unemployed for nearly a year and in school to get my nursing degree. It outlined all the ways I had worked to pinch pennies and after putting it all down on paper, I realized I was more resourceful than I thought. It was then I really embraced frugal …

The Wild Unknown: The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man card is a very simple one - a black bat hangs at rest, upside down against a background that fades from dark into light at the bottom.

The 12th card in The Wild Unknown tarot is The Hanged Man. The Hanged Man Creator’s Keywords: Sacrifice, Letting Go The Hanged Man card is a very simple one – a black bat hangs at rest, upside down against a background that fades from dark into light at the bottom. It looks almost like it’s in a cocoon, it’s wings are wrapped tightly against the …

Something for the weekend

Something for the weekend - what's been inspiring me this week

Hope this last week has treated you nicely! I was asked to submit a write-up and photographs for Amazing Moms: Parents of the 21st Century, a coffee table book by United We Parent and I finally got everything together and submitted this week. It was something of a struggle to get what they considered a decent self-portrait. I just hate being in front of the …

Book Review: Star, Branch, Spiral, Fan by Yellena James

Star, Branch, Spiral, Fan: Learn to Draw from Nature's Perfect Design Structures (Amazon, $15.17) did not disappoint - it's gorgeous inside and out and the content is amazing! The book is designed to teach a beginner how to draw, using nature's shapes to form beautiful designs.

I’ve been a huge fan of artist Yellena James for years. In 2009 I purchased one of her beautiful prints, framed it and hung it above my daughter’s changing table. That print now hangs over the crib of my youngest daughter. When I’d received my print in the mail from Yellena, she included a limited edition lino print in aqua which I have framed above …

Balancing motherhood, work and blogging

o, how do I balance it all – being a mother to three children ages 13, 7 and 1, a wife, and a labor and delivery nurse? Some weeks are better than others, I’m not going to lie. But I’ve found the key is prioritizing and planning. I’m going to share my tips with you here. Maybe there’s something you can take away from them to better balance the priorities in your life.

I’ve been blogging at Jennadesigns for nine years now! What started as an outlet for my creative projects has turned into something of a community and I’m loving it. Depending on what was going on in my life at the time – school, new baby, new relationship, new job – I’ve blogged less often than I would have liked in the past. But it seems …

DIY: Photo backdrop stand, $10 and 10 minutes

I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to DIY your own backdrop stand out of PVC pipe, so I grabbed my trusty notebook and drew up a quick sketch of what I'd need. Because my space in the basement is limited, I decided to go with a stand that was 54-inches wide and just over 60-inches tall. This is the perfect height for (smaller) kids like I have.

I take a ton of pictures, not just of my children, but also for the blog. I’ve been in the process of setting up a home photography studio in the basement for the past few months. (My post here about how to set up a home studio on a budget has been hugely popular!). I had ordered a number of vinyl photography backdrops from China …
